A Program Designed to Help Nevada's Children
with Hearing Impairments obtain Hearing Aids.
WHAT IS THE NEED
The State of Nevada Health Division statistics indicated that there
are approximately 1,000 children who have been identified as
having a hearing impairment. This does not include children from
birth to school age with a hearing impairment.
Even though Nevada provides for newborn hearing test, many
families do not take advantage of this service. The state also
provides for testing children up to three years old through the state
Health Division Nevada Early Intervention Service for many child
medical problems which includes hearing impairment.
WHO NEEDS HELP
Families who have a child that has a hearing impairment and needs
hearing aids and the family do not have the financial resources to
purchase them. Many families do not have health insurance that
will pay for hearing aids or the financial resources to obtain them.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO THE CHILD
Many of these children are considered as being “different” from
other children. This requires the child to be placed in a special
group with others who have hearing impairments. Studies have
shown that many of these children are not integrated in regular
class rooms and spend very little time learning and interacting
with those that have normal hearing. If the child has hearing aids
they are able to attend regular classes and spend more free time
with their school mates thereby reducing the trauma of being
considered different. Hearing aids also better prepares them for
entry into normal adulthood and obtain gainful employment.
